The process of identifying the mathematical operation involves deciding which
mathematical operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division) will be
useful in solving a word problem.

Example 1. Rachna had 12 ribbons. Her mother gave her 5 more ribbons.
How many ribbons does she have in all?

            Solution. Operation: + – × ÷ Answer: 12 + 5 = 17 ribbons

Example 2. Soni had a packet of 12 pencils. She lost 2 pencils at school.
How many pencils does she have left?

            Solution. Operation: + – × ÷ Answer: 12 – 2 = 10 pencils

Example 3. A pack of cards has 12 cards. How many cards will be there
            in 4 such packets?

            Solution. Operation: + – × ÷ Answer: 12 × 4 = 48 cards

Example 4. The cost of 8 oranges is `80. What is the cost of 1 orange?

            Solution. Operation: + – × ÷ Answer: `80 ÷ 8 = `10

                        Exercise 5I

tick ( ) the correct mathematical operation. then find the answer.

                1. There are 5 pencils in box A and 9 pencils in box B. How many pencils
are there altogether in the two boxes.

                     + – × ÷ Answer: ____________________

                2. There are 2 mangoes in each basket. How many mangoes are there in
                    5 such baskets?

                     + – × ÷ Answer: ____________________

                3. There are 10 oranges. Anjali ate 3 oranges. How many oranges are left?

                     + – × ÷ Answer: ____________________
